About Nefesh
My name is Rachel Calman, and my passion for crafting art that speaks to the soul is at the heart of everything I create. Since my days as a Hartford Art School student, I’ve been pushing artistic boundaries, forging endless connections between art and its viewers, and dreaming up fresh ways to bring peace and vibrance to new spaces.
After ten years of working in the corporate world, I decided to ditch my nine-to-five to get back to who I am and what exhilarates me. I think all along, I knew I’d end up here, creating pieces with purpose and putting a bit of my soul into each creation so they can better speak to yours. And now, all of my work is gathered under one hand-crafted roof.
Where color theory and abstraction meet soul and spirit, you’ll find my brand: Nefesh.
So why Nefesh? Directly translated from Hebrew—a language that’s at the core of my Jewish roots—Nefesh means soul. But to me, and to my art, Nefesh also uniquely describes the reaction that takes place when the colors, textures, and intentions I’ve weaved together strike a chord that awakens something within you. Maybe it’s a sense of calm, a feeling of warmth, or simply joy. Whatever you experience, those elements manifest an energy—one you want to welcome into your space. That’s what I strive for.
Every work of art that I create has a purpose and a personality, all its own. And because no two designs are exactly alike, I like to think that I’m making each piece for who it’s meant to resonate with.
